Album Cover

I met Nicolás Pablo in 2004 during a six month stay in Bahía de Caráquez, Ecuador. He's the one with the sunglasses in the picture to the left. His brother, Hector Pablo, is the one holding the guitar. This picture was reproduced from the cover of their first CD: Hecho a Mano (Made by Hand).

From what Nicolás told me, his brother is the true professional musician of the family, who makes his living playing gigs in the larger cities in Ecuador. Nicolás plays with him when it's convenient, sitting in with vocals, backup guitar and/or percussion. He was definitely involved in the making of this CD. In fact, he wrote the lyrics to the song, Bahía de Noche de Luna Llena which, in my opinion, is one of the best songs on the album, but I'll let you judge that for yourself. Here are the songs; click to play:

  1. 1. La Boa
  2. 2. Dos Gardenias
  3. 3. Son de la Loma
  4. 4. Todo al Revés*
  5. 5. Lágrimas Negras
  6. 6. Dónde Estabas Tú
  7. 7. Bahía de Noche de Luna Llena
  8. 8. Catalina la O
  9. 9. Quitate Tú
  10. 10. Buscándo Guayaba

More background: At some point before I met Nicolás, the brothers had scraped together enough money to have their CD produced locally. I believe they printed about 1000 copies. By the time I came to know Nicolás (I never actually met Hector), the CDs had all been sold and they didn't have enough money to print more. In fact, I was only able to obtain my copy because Nicolás found a relative (it seems everyone has a cousin in Bahía) who had an extra and was willing to sell it to me. The money that trickled in from CD sales went hand-to-mouth to support these poor, talented musicians in an impoverished country.

My heart went out to them. In my opinion, the songs on their CD are better than anything Britney Spears ever thought of doing (which, on second thought, really isn't as strong a compliment as I meant it to be!) Believe me, what most of us "rich" gringos consider small change can go a long way in a country like Ecuador. Stay tuned!

Nicolas and Hector
